The New Bern Historical Society invites you to an exciting storytelling event, the Hallowed Ground Lantern Tour. Enjoy a guided walk by lantern light along the wooded trails of Battlefield Park and hear first-hand the moving stories of real characters who found themselves in New Bern in 1862. You will hear about the planning behind the surf-boat landing at Slocum Creek, a New Bern freed slave on a first name basis at the White House, and sisters rebelling in their own way against the Union occupation of New Bern. Just to list a few! Guests will also walk through a full civil war encampment to learn about the day in the life of a soldier.
Not a battlefield tour or a program about the Civil War, these are poignant human stories of experiences, largely based on letters, diaries and contemporaneous accounts.
