Rachel Carson Reserve
The Rachel Carson Reserve is located between the mouths of the Newport and North Rivers and directly across Taylor’s Creek from the historic town of Beaufort. Diverse arrays of important coastal habitats are found here, including tidal flats, salt marshes, ocean beach, soft bottom, shell bottom, dredge spoil areas, sand dunes, shrub thicket, submerged aquatic vegetation, and maritime forest. Many bird species use the Reserve for nesting and migratory habitat, and the Reserve is also home to a herd of approximately 30 wild horses. Be aware, it is only accessible by private boat or passenger ferry.
Education programs including public field trips, summer camps and school field experiences focus on exploring the habitats and creatures of the Reserve, and highlighting the value of estuaries to coastal communities. Most field experiences occur during the summer.
