Fun at the Farm: Apples, Pumpkins, Corn Mazes and Hayrides

From late summer through fall, many farms in North Carolina come alive as fun destinations for the whole family. Pick mouthwatering apples and picture-perfect pumpkins, find your way through corn mazes, and kick back and enjoy a hayride. Plus, as the fall season progresses, you can experience these activities in the midst of colorful autumn leaves.

Fall U-pick options at Jeter Mountain Farm include grapes, blackberries, gourds, squash, pumpkins and more than 20 varieties of apples. The fun continues with a hard cider tasting room, coffee house, market, indoor play area, onsite barbecue truck and a bakery spread out over 400 acres. The farm also offers a wheelchair lift on one of its tractor-pulled wagons.​

Located on 100 acres, this family-run farm offers more than 30 varieties of apples for purchase. You can also pick pumpkins, explore the corn maze, and shop at the country store and bakery.

This 100-acre farm offers a farmers market, a corn maze, wagon rides and live music. The Appalachian Trail and Fontana Lake are nearby to explore.

4 Sky Top Orchard

At an elevation of 3,000 feet, Sky Top Orchard has a wide variety of pick-your-own apples throughout October, and activities continue through late November or early December. Aside from panoramic views, the orchard also offers hayrides, an animal park, a playground and gem mine.

This family-run farm boasts 35 acres of apples for picking. Keep an eye out for them at local farmers markets, too.

This historic farm is more than 100 years old. In addition to apple picking, the orchard celebrates the people, music and natural beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. There’s a special event here every weekend day of apple harvest season mid-September through late October.

Smith's Nursery offers pumpkin picking, goat walks and yoga, hayrides and more in the fall. Visitors are treated to bluegrass and folk music, storytelling and pumpkin painting on weekends.

On fall weekends, Vollmer Farm’s Back-40 Playground opens and the fun really begins. A Great Pumpkin Jump trampoline, a 100-foot underground slide, hayrides and a corn maze are just a few activities the family can enjoy, in addition to pumpkin picking.
